Classification of Visha According to Ayurveda

स्थावरं जङ्गमं  चैव द्विविधं विषमुच्यते |
दशाधिष्टानमाध्यं तु द्वितीयं शोडशाश्रयं || ( सु.क. २/३)

 The poison is classified into two types. One of them is sthavaravisha and its sites are ten and the other one is jangamavisha and its sites are sixteen. In other context while describing about the action of poison , Sushruta has described about kritrimavisha.

Akritrima Visha - Natural Poison 


These are of two types
i) Sthavara visha
ii) Jangama visha

Kritrima Visha - Artificial Poison

These are also two types 
i) Dushi Visha
ii) Gara Visha 


Gara Visha - Unnatural poison or chemically prepared by combination of two or more poisons.
                    ex - Mixing of honey and ghee in same amount.

Dushi Visha - It is type of kritrima visha which stays in the body and slowly it vitiates all the dhatus and at last leads to death.

According to Rasatarangini of Rasashastra -



The Sthavaravisha is again sub-classified into two types-


a) Mahavisha - High potency

b) Upavisha - Less potency

Visha Yoni (Origin of Visha)
Visha is said to have two yoni-s

i) Sthavara (स्थावर)

ii) Jangama (जान्गम)

जन्गमस्थावरायां तध्योनो ब्रह्मा न्ययोजयेत | (च,चि. २६/६)
Lord brahma have made Sthavara and Jangama visha.

There are 10 Sources of Sthavara Visha

मूलं पत्रं फलं पुष्पम त्वक्क्षीरं सार एव च |
निर्यासो धातवश्चैव कन्दश्च दशमः स्मृतः || ( सु.क. २/४)
1. Moola (Root)
2. Patra (Leaf)
3. Phala (fruit)
4. Pushpa (Flower)
5. Twak (Bark)
6. Kshira (Alkali)
7. Sara 
8. Niryasa (Extract)
9. Dhatu 
10. Kanda 
Jangama Visha adhishtana (जङ्गम अधिष्ठान)
There are 16 Sources of Jangama Visha
तत्र दृष्टिनि : शवसदंष्ट्रनख मूत्र  पुरीष शुक्रलालार्तव  |
मुखसन्दंश विशर्धिततुण्डास्थि पित्तषुक्रशवानिति || (सु.क. २३/१७)
